Rock Outcroppings and Such

Outcropping –                                                          

Coopers Rock, West Virginia

isn’t that a great word?
The very idea that
tons of rock can jut out
and
hang
on the pinion
of the good intentions
of other rocks,
seeming to defy gravity
but actually fulfilling
its dictates,
I find splendid.

To stand over,
above,
on,
beside,
or under
(especially under)
a great outcropping
of rock
is to stand on
some pretty confident,
if not holy,
ground.

Rocks seem to hang in mid-air

but they only seem to

for there, hiding behind the

trees lies a mountain

of rock solid

that merely deigns

to show us

an ankle here

an elbow there

such a flirt

the mountain
